This map shows the airplane routes we took in Indonesia during our 2½ years here. Many of these routes received multiple visits. Duane went to Manila via Singapore two times and Clare Ann once, separately. The Yogyakarta - Jakarta route was heavily traveled, something like once a month by either or both of us. Trips to Papua always went through Ujung Pandang, also called Makassar, in South Sulawesi. We wound up in Bali many times, sometimes on purpose and other times due to weather or odd routes. More than once we flew from Ujung Pandang to Bali, then to Surabaya where we took another plane to Yogya.

Besides airplanes we also used the train on Java, Clare Ann also used the intercity bus and small travel vans. Both of us wound up in small boats and we took the ship a couple of times. Travel was always an adventure. When everything went according to plan travel was as easy as ever in the US. That wasn't normal. There was the time we tried three different small planes to get the 100 miles from the small island of Biak to Manokwari in Papua's Bird's Head. We also used the Missionary Aviation Fellowship Cessna to get to the interior of Papua.

We were stranded in Manado for a week thanks to Y2K when our aircrew got cold feet and wouldn't fly to Davao. Duane was in the air between Tokyo and Singapore when the 9-11 attacks happended.

Duane traveled alone outside the country for visa renewal in Singapore, to lead a workshop in Davao, Mindanao, to teach at Asian Theological Seminary for two weeks in Manila, and for a one week meeting in Minneapolis. Clare Ann and Duane together went to Davao for MCC retreat, to New Zealand where Duane attended a conference and both vacationed, and for a three week vacation in Australia. Clare Ann went alone to Manila for MCC Country Representative retreat.
